Flyposting removal
We respond to requests for the removal of illegal flyposting.
What is flyposting?
Flyposting is the illegal posting of adverts or posters. It is unattractive and costs valuable resources of time and money to remove.Flyposting:
- is illegal
- is a drain on resources to remove it
- can cause an area to look run down
- can encourage other forms of antisocial behaviour such as graffiti
- can cause a fear of crime in an area
- can cause offence through the use of inappropriate religious, political or racist language
- is unfair to businesses who respect the law and advertise legally
- causes litter when old posters fall onto the street.
Our duty
We have no legal duty to remove flyposters. However, we will remove or paint over them as necessary. And we will take enforcement action where appropriate to recover the costs of removing and painting over flyposters.
What other agencies do
The Planning Service have enforcement powers to remove flyposting. And the Roads Service also remove flyposters from their traffic signs or street lighting.
The Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act
We hope that the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act will be extended to include Northern Ireland. This legislation would help to control the level of flyposting within Belfast.
You can find out more about the act on the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) website.
