Smoke-free NI
On 30 April 2007, Northern Ireland introduced a ban on smoking in public places. Many restaurants, cinemas, shops and offices had already imposed smoking restrictions. After this date, smoking was no longer acceptable in any enclosed place.
Most smokers prefer smoke free venues. Nipping out for a cigarette isn’t always convenient and they reduce their smoking. No smoking restaurants, hotels and pubs enhance comfort and enjoyment of social occasions for everyone. It also provides a
healthier working environment for catering and waiting staff.
Smokers stand outside restaurant or pub doors and often discard their cigarette litter on the pavements. Belfast City Council is working with pub, restaurant and hotel owners to ensure that smoking patrons dispose of cigarette litter in bins.
