Regional rate

The regional rate, set by central government, has not changed for 2010 - 2011.

Central government has been able to freeze the regional rate because it is only a very small part of its overall income and because of high regional rate increases in recent years.

District rate

The district rate, set by us, is to rise by 7.81 per cent.

The district rate is the main source of income for councils with over 75 per cent of our income coming from rates.

We have worked extremely hard to keep the rates down while making sure that we maintain and improve our services and plan for the future. We’ve done this by cutting £7 million of costs out of the budgets since 2006. We will also be cutting a further £2 million from budgets from the start of April 2010.

Total spend for 2010 - 2011

District Rate: £120.6m
