Primary school
In Northern Ireland, the school year begins in early September and lasts until late June. School is compulsory when a child is already four years old by 1 September.
You need to apply to ensure your child has a primary school place. Forms are available from any nursery or primary school and BELB. You must apply by mid January. In early April, BELB informs parents about intake for September.
All primary school places are free. Books and materials are also free. Children wear school uniform which you buy from the school.
Preparatory schools are primary schools attached to grammar schools. All places are fee paying. You apply directly to the preparatory school for your child’s admission.
Children attend primary school until they are eleven years old, Years 1-7.
