Pre school
In Northern Ireland, school is compulsory when a child is four by 1 September when the school year begins.
Nursery schooling is recommended to encourage a child’s integration and interaction with other children. The pre schooling system is not compulsory and accepts children who are at least three years old on 1 September.
Pre schooling takes place in playgroups and nurseries. There are state funded nurseries where all places are free. Places are limited and preference is always given to children who meet government-set rules.
Children attend morning, afternoon or all day sessions. You need to apply during January. Forms are available from BELB and nurseries. In May BELB informs parents about intake for September.
Most pre school nurseries are attached or associated with primary schools. Children attending a pre school nursery usually wear uniform which you buy from the nursery.
Full and part time places are available at private nurseries. You apply directly to the nursery. If accepted, you usually sign a contract and pay monthly or weekly fees.
State and private nurseries are registered and employ staff who are qualified in childcare and pre school learning.
