Pharmacists

A pharmacist sells medicine and dispenses medicines as prescribed by a GP, optician or dentist. Also known as a chemist, the pharmacist can advise on healthcare and the effects of prescribed medicine or treatment.

When you receive a written prescription from a doctor, you must complete the back of the form before giving it to the pharmacist. A fee is charged for each item written on a prescription.

Free prescriptions are given to students under 19 years, welfare recipients and low income earners. The pharmacist often asks to see proof of your exemption from prescription charges.

A quarterly or yearly prepayment certificate is recommended for anyone requiring frequent prescriptions. The pharmacist issues the certificate when you pay a quarterly or annual fee. You can use this certificate to order prescribed items in any pharmacy.
