Sundays are Fundays in Belfast

4 March 2010

A new Belfast City Council initiative is proving that Sundays are now definitely `Fundays`.

With music and circus, theatre and tours, markets and even video gaming, `Sunday In The City` already is proving a hit with shoppers, culture vultures and those just looking for a weekend `chillout`.

Old favourites and new experiences now combine to counter the argument that `there`s nothing to do on a Sunday`, with a range of activities designed to appeal to all ages and tastes.

Councillor William Humphrey, Chairman of Belfast City Council`s Development Committee explains:

“We`re really keen to keep on adding to and enhancing the visitor experience in Belfast.

“The `Sunday In The City` programme is really helping to build a critical mass of affordable events and activities for Belfast people and our ever growing numbers of visitors to enjoy – and it`s energising our city centre like never before. `Sunday In The City` is already proving to be extremely popular – and I look forward to seeing even more people enjoying the buzz, colour and excitement that this programme is creating”.

To give just a taste of what`s on offer, some of the activities include:

• rehearsed readings of new plays from some of our finest theatre companies every Sunday in the Ulster Hall, for just £1;
• be dazzled at acts of acrobatic genius and have a belly laugh at some of the finest circus acts in Europe at the Belfast Circus School;
• a `Sunday Service` with a difference, with re-creations of famous speeches;
• behind the scenes tours of the Grand Opera House;
• an `Electronic Creche` at the newly refurbished Crescent Arts Centre, with the sounds of Belfast DJs, get a chance to catch up on the Sunday papers – and take advantage of the wi-fi and Nintendo Wii on offer;
• weekly tours of Belfast`s many galleries;
• the Oh Yeah music centre is opening its doors for `Sunday Sessions` - a chance to enjoy some of the greatest in local music, up close and vibrantly live for free;
• the weekly Belfast Music tour;
• the monthly `Black Market`, `Black Books`, `Goblin Market`, `Rock `n` Roll High School` at the Black Box;
• the monthly `Fashion Souk` at the Ulster Hall - an Aladdin`s cave of vintage, previously loved and nearly new clothes and accessories;
• the monthly Céilí at An Chultúrlann.

The `Sunday In The City` programme is presented by Belfast City Council in partnership with trans and part funded by the European Regional Development Fund, under the European Sustainable Competitiveness Programme for Northern Ireland and administered by the Northern Ireland Tourist Board.
