Marriages

Any two people, regardless of where they live, can marry in Northern Ireland provided that:

• they are 18 or above on the day of their marriage (consent must be obtained for those aged between 16 and 18)
• they are not related to one another in a way that would prevent them from getting married
• neither of them is already a civil partner or is legally married
• they are not the same sex.

There are four types of marriage ceremony.

These are:

• civil marriage in the Registrar's office (in Belfast City Hall)
• civil marriage in an approved venue (subject to availability of the Registrar)
• civil marriage in a venue of your choice (subject to approval and availability of the Registrar)
• religious marriage

Both partners must complete a marriage notice form before a ceremony can take place.
