Discrimination
Human rights are fundamental freedoms which everyone should enjoy. Awareness of human rights grew after World War II with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The European Convention of Human Rights in 1950 guaranteed basic human rights for citizens in all European countries.
Your human rights are protected by legislation in Northern Ireland. The Human Rights Act 1998 outlaws discrimination against you because of your race, gender, age, political or religious belief, disability or sexual orientation.
Discrimination means that you are treated less favourably than your peers. This might occur in an entertainment venue, in the workplace or during a job application process with a prospective employer.
Citizens Advice Bureau can answer your questions about human
rights and anti-discrimination legislation.
