Disability
Disability refers to a physical, sensory, intellectual or mental impairment exhibited by a child, man or woman. A disability might be present at birth, or develop due to genetic inheritance or strike after an accident or injury.
Legislation in Northern Ireland ensures that all employers and educational centres do not discriminate against applicants with disabilities. There are several voluntary support groups in Belfast for people with disabilities. These groups campaign to improve the quality of life for people with disabilities. As well as lobbying for employment, education and housing rights, they also seek better access to public transport, air travel and entertainment venues.
Belfast City Council’s parks and open spaces are wheelchair accessible. Brochures and leaflets are available in large print when requested. Several signed theatre performances are given during each season at the Waterfront Hall.
